AML-3 instruments
Versatile. Flexible. Reliable.
The AML-3 is THE most versatile, multi-sensor oceanographic instrument currently available. The AML-3 has three sensor ports on the endcap; sensor payload is modular and can be field-swapped to meet project requirements. Certain sensors such as CT and SVT are dual parameter, thus enabling the direct measurement of up to four distinct parameters from the instrument's end-cap. In addition, the AML-3 calculates salinity and density.
AML Oceanographic Ltd. has more than 40 years of experience manufacturing oceanographic data loggers, sondes, and probes. Our hallmark instrument, the AML-3, comes in three distinct versions: RTS (Real-Time), LGR (Logger), and XC (dual capability).
AML-3 RTS - (Real-Time)
This entry level version of the AML-3 is commonly deployed on buoys and underwater observatories, as well as on ROVS and AUVs. The AML-3 RTS is designed for real-time data streaming, and has neither battery nor memory. A bulkhead connector brings power to the instrument and streams data back to the user.
Common use cases include:
- Sea Chest Measurement with Sound Velocity & Temperature
- Salinity and Density Monitoring from Buoys Using Conductivity and Temperature
- ROV Equipped with Conductivity, Sound Velocity, Temperature, and Pressure
- Conductivity, Temperature, and Dissolved Oxygen on a Cabled Observatory
AML-3 LGR - (Logger)
The industry standard for high accuracy profiling, the LGR is predominantly used for water column work. This version of the AML-3 comes with a Lithium Ion battery and onboard memory. Data transfer is effected via WiFi or USB connectivity. To maximize reliability, instrument on / off is managed with a magnetic switch rather than a bulkhead connector.
Common uses cases include:
- Multibeam Correction with Sound Velocity and Pressure Profiling
- Turbidity Monitoring for Dredging Operations
- Citizen Science Collection of Conductivity, Temperature, Pressure and Dissolved Oxygen
AML-3 XC - (Dual Capability)
The premium version of the AML-3 includes both data logging and real-time streaming features. This dual capability version of the instrument is valuable to those who value proper redundancy of data logging and/or redundancy of power supply. Ideally, this version of AML-3 is useful for those who have requirements that vary mission by mission.
Common uses cases include:
- Conductivity & Temperature on Buoys with Tight Power Budgets
- Science Projects with varying sensor payload requirements but with zero room for recovery

Looking for a multi-parameter sonde? Click here to learn more about the AML-6, an instrument with up to 8 sensor ports.
The AML-3 is a versatile multiparameter instrument designed for diverse data collection needs. The AML-3 features three sensor ports on the endcap, allowing modular sensor swapping to tailor to various project requirements. Certain sensors, such as CT and SVT, offer dual-parameter measurements. The AML-3 also calculates salinity and density.
AML-3 LGR is the industry standard for high-accuracy profiling, equipped with a Lithium Ion battery and onboard memory. It excels in water column studies and offers data transfer through WiFi or USB. On the other hand, AML-3 RTS is designed for real-time applications and is externally powered for continuous data streaming. It's commonly deployed on buoys, observatories, ROVs, and AUVs.
AML-3's are highly customizable, accommodating a range of user-specific sensors. Feel free to reach out to us for inquiries about specific sensor combinations.
AML-3 LGR feature a magnetic switch adjacent to the shackle for easy on/off control. This mechanism enhances instrument reliability.
Certainly, especially the AML-3 LGR & the XC. These instruments are designed to internally log sensor measurements, allowing for post-deployment data transfer and analysis.
Communication varies based on the version. For the 500m version, communication primarily occurs through WiFi (500 m), as AML-3 LGR sets up a WiFi hotspot for data transfer. For the 6000m version, communication is facilitated via the USB-C connector, serving both power and data transfer purposes.
