X•Series Instruments
Sensor Xchangeable Instruments

Due for launch at OI 2010, the X•Series of Sensor-Xchangeable Instruments is a family of oceanographic instruments that allows you to change any instrument's sensor-load, in the field and on demand.

Using the X•Series with XchangeTM field-swappable sensors, your CTD can become an SVTP; Shallow pressure sensors can be swapped for deep; and temperature range can be extended or tightened, as needed.  In the example at left, a Smart•X real-time instrument - frequently used for AUV or ROV deployments - can be configured as a CTD, an SVP, a CT, or an SVTP.  Pressure range can vary - on demand - from 50 dBar to 6000 dBar and temperature range can switch between -2 to 32oC and -2 to 45oC.

But the X•Series lets you do much more than just adjust the sensor load of one instrument.  All X•Series instruments share a common architecture.  This means that any sensor-head can be attached to any instrument, regardless of size or type: real-time probe, vertical profiler, or in-situ logger.   What does this mean?  To build upon the example above, one of the sensor-heads attached to the Smart•X could be redeployed to a Plus•X to log a vertical profile.

Multi-Model Family Provides Total Flexibility

Because sensor-heads are field-swappable, and because all X Series instruments share the same architecture, you can place which ever sensors you need on your instrument model of choice.  Total flexibility - of instrument model, of sensor type, and of sensor range - ensures that the right instrument is always available.

Within the X•Series family, there are two real-time instruments, the Micro•X and the Smart•X.  The Micro•X - the instrument in the farthest background - is a single sensor real-time instrument often used in transducer mount or sea chest applications.  2nd from back, the Smart•X is a real-time multi sensor probe designed for AUV, ROV, and other integration work.

There are also two loggers in the X Series family.   The Minos•X - 2nd from front - is a small vertical profiler, ideal for work in confined spaces like small launches or boat.  At front, the Plus•X is a full-sized multi-parameter instrument ideal for profiling or in-situ studies.  All four of these these instruments are compatible with the four XchangeTM field-swappable sensor-heads: SV•XchangeTM, C•XchangeTM, P•XchangeTM, and T•XchangeTM.

XchangeTM Field Swappable Sensors

The X•Series makes use of XchangeTM field-swappable sensors.  Each XchangeTM sensor-head contains its own embedded calibration, a key part of enabling the sensor to work with any X•Series instrument.  It is this embedded calibration - as well as critical electronics components - that ensure that field accuracy is maintained.

Field swappable sensors also streamline recalibration: instead of sending the entire instrument back to a recalibration centre, a calibrated sensor-head can be sent to the instrument.  Changing sensors is easy: simply unscrew one sensor and replace it with another.

What are the Benefits?

The X Series offers some terrific benefits - portrayed visually in the following posters and explained in greater detail in the text summaries below:

  1. Greater return on investment: Each instrument can multi-task as CTD - for oceanographic or environmental studies - or SVTP - for hydrographic work.  Instruments can function at multiple pressure ranges, simply by swapping a shallow pressure sensor for a deeper version of the same sensor.  An X•Series instrument can be used on more deployments, assuring greater usage and a greater return on investment;
  2. Right instrument always ready: Calibrated sensors can be shared amongst all X Series instruments - regardless of instrument type or model.  Mobility of calibrated sensors from instrument-to-instrument and amongst all instrument types provides you with outstanding flexibility.  The right instrument for today's application can always field ready;
  3. Eliminate instrument downtime: Instruments no longer need to leave the field for recalibration.  Instead, spare, calibrated sensor-heads can be shipped to the instrument.  Outdated sensor-heads and swapped for recalibrated sensor-heads in the field, in a matter of minutes.  Work goes on;
  4. Reduction in transport and logistics costs: Because instruments can be recalibrated by a change of sensor-head, it is no longer necessary to ship heavy, bulky instruments back and forth to recalibration centres.  Instead, light and compact sensor-heads can be couriered back and forth at a fraction of the cost;
  5. Greater system redundancy: Mobility of sensor-heads and modularity of instruments minimizes the risk of downtime on board the vessel.  Replace a field-swappable sensor-head or move a calibrated sensor-head from one instrument to another, and you're up and running again;
  6. Streamlined management: Less time spent administering instrument recalibration and certification requirements.
Featured Product: Smart•X

The Smart•X - one of AML's new Sensor Xchangeable Instruments - can be CTD, SVTP, CT, or SVP depending upon the application at hand.  Our smallest multi-sensor real-time instrument yet, the Smart•X is ideal for AUV, ROV, or other vehicle applications.
